The subject of recumbent hounds is well-represented among Song dynasty jade carvings and examples dating to this period are invariably characterized by the well-observed naturalistic depiction of the hound’s posture and the detailed carving of the animal’s features. Compare the present example with a jade hound attributed to the Tang dynasty in the Guanfu Collection illustrated by J. Watt， Chinese Jades from Han to Ch’ing， New York， 1980， p. 60， no. 37 which displays a similar style of carving to depict the ribs and spine.
