Virtue & Purity - A Selection Of Fine Chinese Jade Carvings

1391
(Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279)) (b. 宋)
A FINELY CARVED YELLOW JADE HOUND

7.5 cm. (3 in.) wide

The subject of recumbent hounds is well-represented among Song dynasty jade carvings and examples dating to this period are invariably characterized by the well-observed naturalistic depiction of the hound’s posture and the detailed carving of the animal’s features. Compare the present example with a jade hound attributed to the Tang dynasty in the Guanfu Collection illustrated by J. Watt, Chinese Jades from Han to Ch’ing, New York, 1980, p. 60, no. 37 which displays a similar style of carving to depict the ribs and spine. Compare, also, a jade hound attributed to the Song dynasty illustrated by Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995,
pl. 26:10.
