AN IMPORTANT LEMON-YELLOW-ENAMELLED 'CHRYSANTHEMUM' DISH

17.5 cm.(6 7/8 in.)diam.

This dish is inspired by the yellow chrysanthemum flowers that bloom in the Autumn. The rims of the dish resemble the petals of a chrysanthemum flower, with shallow arched tips, resting on a short straight foot. It is evenly covered with vibrant lemon-yellow enamel, with a circle reserved in transparent glaze on the base inscribed in underglaze-blue with a six-character Yongzheng reign mark within a double circle. Emperor Yongzheng had exquisite atheistic taste, producing the finest low-fired glaze Imperial monochrome porcelain wares during his reign. Lemon-yellow enamel was both invented and perfected in the Yongzheng reign. It is considered a low-fired glaze derived from lead antimonite. Lemon-yellow is also known as “Western yellow” or “foreign yellow”.
Lemon-yellow enamelled chrysanthemum dishes are extremely rare,as most examples of porcelains produced in this colour are plain dishes or bowls. Only one other extant example appears to have been recorded,a lemon-yellow-enamelled dish in the Palace Museum,Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasure of the Palace Museum:Monochrome Porcelain,Hong Kong,1999,pl. 257.
