This is a relief showing a frontal view of Prince Siddhartha’s Great Departure scene,leaving home in Kapilavastu to search for a way to end human suffering at the age of 29. Dressed in royal attire,he rides a horse in the middle of the night,while being surrounded by six other attendants in an attempt to prevent the prince from leaving. A similar example is illustrated in L’art Du Gandhara,France,p. 331,pl. 184 and another example in Gandharan Sculpture – A Catalogue of the Collection in the Museum of Art and Archaeology University of Missouri-Columbia,Missouri,1981,p. 7;two other examples depicting this scene are illustrated in The Art of Gandhara—Buddhist monks’ Art,on the North-West frontier of Pakistan,Paris,1986,pl. 63 & 287.
