(Southern Song Dynasty(1127-1279)) (b. 南宋)
AN EXTREMELY RARE FINE SANDSTONE CARVING OF BUDDHA

126 cm.(49 5/8 in.)high(with stand)

Property from the Collection of Cheng Huan,S.C.

Compare the present figure to a sandstone figure of seated Guanyin sold at Christie’s Hong Kong,Stillness of the Enlightened Mind - Chinese Buddhist Art,3 June 2015,lot 3008. The sash around the waist,in particular,is very similar in style in both examples,as are the finely carved nearly closed downcast eyelids.
Both examples appear to compare closely with similar figures found in Sichuan province dated to the Song dynasty. The style and origin of the group is extensively discussed by A. Howard,Summit of Treasures,Buddhist Cave Art of Dazu,China,Connecticut,2001. The way in which the draped clothing is depicted and the facial features of the Buddhist figures are stylistically very similar to the present example in a number of examples illustrated by the author, including,op cit.,p. 11,fig. 12,p. 19,fig 20;and p. 96,fig. 117.
