A Landscape in Fantasy,
Moreover than Living Land
Luis Chan

A prominent figure in art history of Hong Kong, Louis Chan was born in Panama in 1905 with a family root originally from Canton, China. He took certificate lessons from Press Art School in London to learn western painting, and joined Hong Kong Arts Association afterwards. His realistic watercolor landscapes were well recognized thus had earned him The King of Watercolour. In 1930s, his started to publish his art critique articles on magazines, and became a leading role at Hong Kong in art back then. In terms of art style, he was devoted to develop in new painting, and had tried oil, watercolour as well as ink and colour paintings, with the framing style of hanging scroll and hand scroll, derives his own artistic language that merges west and east in creation.
Landscape of this season is painted in 1974, and is one of the artist’s classic works with an imaginary touch. The elements on the painting including the house, the river, and the grass and trees on the mountain…are all expressed with a fantasy that comes from fairy tales. The horizontal landscape is divided to several layers——the sky stands for upper layer, the far mountain and beach represents the medium layer, and the sea covers the bottom of the work. The artists brings all the natural sights within one picture, and created a wide and open scenery that comes from eastern culture inherited from Shan Hai Classic stories. The separation between sky and ground indicates a transverse section of the universe, comes with an order, and flows back to where they belong. They influence each other while permeating each other, creates sceneries that out of naked eyes. Thus opens the audience’s imagination beyond the reality.
