Jun ware is classified as one of the ‘five classic wares’ of the Song dynasty and was produced primarily at a number of kilns in Yuxian, Henan province. Often referred to by Chinese scholars as ‘moon white’, the lustrous lavender-blue Jun glazes have a rich and opalescent quality that is highly sought after by collectors. The sky-blue glaze on the present lot is subtly striking, exhibiting a sophisticated yet restrained and elegant nature.

Examples similar to the present lot are found in museum collections around the world. Compare a Jun-glazed tripod incense burner and cover also with mythical beast-style feet in the collection of the Percival David Foundation （accession no.PDF.95）, presently exhibited in the British Museum, London； and another （accession no.1947, 0712.107） bequeathed to the collection of the British Museum by Henry J. Oppenheim in 1947.
