Private collection， AmericaAs one of the few Chinese 20th century artists who have lived in both France and America， Walasse Ting gets influenced by the two streams of culture， which has further nourished his art language. In 1952， Walasse traveled to Paris， since then， the artist found his sense of belonging there. He joined the CoBrA， an avant-garde art group in Paris. Under the impact of Expressionism， the artist introduced the ink into his painting. The bold abstract splash and potent calligraphic lines connotes an oriental disposition. This exclusive art language was well recognized by the local art people. In 1954， Walasse hold the exhibition at Galerie Paul Facchetti， to establish his profile. In 1958， Walasse migrated to New York， inspired by the Pop Art， he chose the daily sceneries as motifs， and applied the western florescent colors to paint on the traditional xuan paper. He also imported the dripping and splashing techniques， which are extremely expressive and worth admiring， and are renowned as the Ting Style. The two lots at the fall sale of the Guardian Hong Kong Three Beauties and Beauty and Parrot were created in the late 1970s， which congregate the artist’s classic perspectives of art. The artist uses his brush to depict his genuine ideas. The sincere and innocent heart behind the gorgeous hues， after the half century， still can be vividly felt by viewers.
Three Beauties – The Painted Romance of Modern Jia Baoyu
In 1978， Walasse Ting’s American wife passed away and he never got remarried. His good friend Jimmy Lai Chee-ying said that the paintings after his wife’s departure should be the best. They are like sediments purified by the artist’s grief. Three Beauties belongs to this phase of creation themed of female figures. In the painting， three women stand in line， all with shoulder length haircuts， red lips and pink cheeks， wearing splendid garments. The most wonderful part is their eyes exuding tenderness and a faint smile. The three beauties are winking and looking around charmingly. The bright flower head dresses echo the bouquets in their hands. The symbolic florescent green matches the gaily yellow and pink， adding a modern delight into the painting， to well present the concept that “The ladies are more beautiful than flowers.”
Beauty and Parrot – Nostalgia Hidden in Colors
Apart from female figures， Walasse Ting liked to keep and paint animals， of which the parrot is one of the main characters in his animal themed works. In the work Beauty and Parrot， in the multicolored background， two female busts slightly lean rightward， with enchanting postures and wearing colorful garments. Their languished looks feature the indolence typically carried by a woman. A parrot perches on the right shoulder of a woman figure， and its crystal eyes reveal its intelligence. The emerald tail contracts greatly with the florescent pink on the woman. The figure on the right holds a colorful fan. Its high saturation and dramatic change of tones build up a rhythmic and vigorous composition.
