PROVENANCE
Private collection, AsiaCloud-capped Mountains
The two artworks now on display are milestone paintings accomplished by Qiu Deshu earlier on and recently. The Fissuring Scenery: Cloud-capped Mountains which was done in 2008 is considered as a master piece of his earlier years and was debuted in one of his solo exhibitions held in Beijing, signaling its significance in his career. In the painting, he smartly brought into being a soothing scene of cloud-capped mountains by delicate use of black and white pigments, thus securing a unique atmosphere on paper that is peculiar to China’s traditional art of ink painting. The artist created varying looks of mountainous rocks by applying different shades of ink, which were set off properly by floating sheets of cloud painted with lighter hues, thus resulting in an artful meeting of mountainous masculinity and cloudy femininity. To the naked eye, the visual experience is a true delight since it demonstrates a novel congregation of dried and moistened colorings woven into profoundly processed rice paper which has been stretched, smoothed, polished and hand-crafted.
