GRS report GRS2017-069388， 28 June 2017， stating the emerald is 9.30 carats， natural， vivid green colour， Colombian origin， minor clarity； with an appendix stating ‘This particular emerald displays an additional velvety appearance caused by a rare growth phenomenon described in the literature as “butterfly-wing effect”. These stones are given the designation GRS-type “Mariposa”， referring to the Spanish word for butterfly.’

Butterfly Wings
Some Colombian emeralds possess an exclusive phenomenon called “butterfly effect” or gota de aceite which caught the eyes of all discerning connoisseurs and in the knowledge of its distinct rarity. This enchanting effect optimizes the beauty as the emerald is tilted back and forth， softening its body colour and adding fineness to the emerald.
The presence of growth structure seems to be the cause of the effect that the etching and regrowth structures form in a plane perpendicular to the c-axis. The growth structure and patterns thus formed are transparent and diffuse the light within the faceted emerald in a manner reminiscent of a drop of thick oil. It takes precisions and know-how of the cutters to recognize the effect and juxtapose its best position to achieve this result.
It is estimated that only one emerald in one or two thousands possess this fine quality and it has to be from Colombian mines due to its growth structure. This optical effect defines its origin； thus increasing the emerald’s value and unparalleled allure.
