Meeting the remarkable man
In the 1980s, Yang Chi-hung came to New York, just as New York's New Image Painting Movement was taking off, due to which Yang started to create expressive paintings infused with romantic and symbolic elements. During his period of “Exploration of Civilization and Archaeology”, he often brought together elements originating from different historical and cultural backgrounds and integrated them with his personal life experiences and vast historical knowledge, creating outstanding works. Meeting the Remarkable Man is a masterpiece of that time. The artist was inspired by Congolese tribal culture, with the protagonist perhaps being a tribal chief who presides over the public affairs of his tribe or a shaman who possesses magical powers. He stands on the right side of the picture resembling a statue, with a token symbolizing his status behind him. On the other side of the picture, the artist uses thin brush strokes to outline a horse, ivory tusks, and other objects, perhaps interpreted as means for a tribe preparing for some special ceremony. The whole work shows contrasts between fine and thick strokes, as well as between color contrast. It brings the viewers to a secret world and invites them to begin an adventure. It is also full of deep reflection upon the conflicts and contradictions between modern life and primitive civilization.
