Huang Yuxing's Masterpiece: Podium
Huang Yuxing's art has gone through several stages of development from early representationalist portraits to the appropriation of ready-made images and the use of geometric shapes for abstract expression. This change has gradually advanced along his artistic practice, and each stage reflects his deep observations upon life.
Contrary to other artists form his generation, Huang Yuxing never simply expressed his ideas on his paintings. He explores the major issues of human life through his works by focusing on current social perspectives. He constructs his pictures with strange colors and geometric structures, creating an illusory world. Huang fuses different media such as oil paint, spray paint, and industrial ink to break the integrity of his images and expose the essence of spectacle society, thus bursting the utopian bubble and giving his paintings a fantastic, hallucinatory touch.
Podium is one of the Huang's largest sized works present on the market. In this eccentric, colorful, and imaginary space, the artist place an eye-catching stage on the “three-dimensional” ground. The psychedelically colored “walls” seem to extend to another space and time, and the fragmented images are stitched together to form a wonderful structure, producing profound visual tension. The viewer seems to be sucked into the picture, either to explore a connection with the outside world, or to be completely lost in this strange realm.
Huang Yuxing has always emphasized the preservation of marks left by accumulated layers of paint, with the strokes from the previous layers remaining visible. In Podium, Huang's brushstrokes are superimposed one after another, forming a thick texture which, along with the various geometric shapes, creates multiple parallel worlds. In terms of the color palette, the fluorescent, multicolored shades add a bizarre and magical atmosphere to the picture.
