The Art Realm of Hsiao Chin
As a founder of the Ton Fan Art Group, Hsiao Chin began to explore and create abstract art as early as the 1950s. Beginning with China's Taoism, he developed this further by exploring the religious philosophy of Tibetan Vajrayana and the Indian mandala. This led him to pursue dialogue between individual life and the universe, and through drawing and spiritual practice, he constantly sought integration with the universe and a transcendence of life and death.
Blossoming of the Power of Life
To take an example, Tandra literally means a method of cleansing as well as extension of consciousness. This is the tradition of secret cultivation of Hinduism and Buddhism over millennia, through stimulating and developing the inner power of the individual so that body and mind reach a state of balance. Inspired in this way, Hsiao Chin's Tandra-2 places an orange-based circle in the middle of a large blue background of varying depth. The circle and its background do not simply apply colored brushstrokes but densely and unevenly group together dots of color and very short brushstrokes. This not only gives the viewer a visually esthetic feeling but, more than that, displays properties of a vast, limitless universe that is unceasingly changing； it can also be seen as a visual interpretation of “meditating while sitting quietly”, and “dantian lower abdominal breathing” in the classics of Chinese traditional medicine. It shows the enormous appeal of art.
Spiritual Power
From about 2003, Hsiao Chin began to develop a series called Universe of Love, placing the everyday symbol for love in the frame and using contrast of vibrant colors or the results of gradual change to symbolize selflessness, forgiveness, and the unlimited power of these two virtues. For example, in finishing Cuore di Amare Universale-12 in 2008, white lines were used as an outline, and light yellow or pale orange was used as the color for the symbol of love. This was placed on the right of the painting, forming an independent object and space. Love as the center gradually spreads out as orange-red, just as sunlight caresses the whole earth, filling it with the power of life. This kind of creative inspiration comes from the Punto international art movement he founded, and at that time, his usual composition used the sun as the centerpiece of the frame, radiating myriad rays of light. Of course, at that time, his creations were influenced by mainstream Pop Art and abstract expressionism, with hardly any individual element, but this work, finished comparatively late, evidently gave expression to the artist's feelings after going through successes and failures and joys and sorrows. As such, his works were all the more sensitive and poetic.
