Swinging Arms Like the Winds and Clouds
The turning point of the Taichi series came in the 1990s, when Ju changed his medium from wood to bronze and the shapes of his works became more concise, more abstract, and more expressive. Sweeping out Cloud is a classic piece of this period.
In his early wooden sculptures, Ju would always carefully carve out all the surface details. However, in Sweeping out Cloud, the artist focuses on the shape of the character, the edges and corners becoming soft. Ju uses large, cut surfaces to represent the waving limbs of the protagonist. The simple lines of the arms, head, and legs show varying aesthetics when viewed from different angles. This work also possesses the rough traits that characterize Yoyo Yang’s early period Taroko Gorge series. Ju utilized the shape of the protagonist to show the power of its movement, incorporating a sense of speed and flow into it and thereby making the work resemble a floating cloud.
