Ceet Fouad’s Chicanos of Personality
Part of the world’s second generation of graffiti artists, Ceet Fouad tries to share his life experience through graffiti creation. In 2003, Ceet came to southern China, starting to create a series of works based on chickens. As the artist once said, his Chicanos comically represent human beings living in modern cities. In this over-crowding world, everyone is used to drifting with the tide, gradually losing their personalities. Through the images of colorful chickens, Ceet arouses the pursuit of individuality and personality in the viewer. The two pieces presented in the auction were created during the artist’s stay in China in 2017, the Year of the Rooster, with distinctive representativeness.
The work I Love Plastic (Lot 771) fully displays the artist’s depiction and reflection on the urban population. The colorful chicks walk on bustling city streets, each in a certain direction, while their eyes already speak out the confusion. In the crowded space, the chicks lengthen their legs, longing for standing out among others. The artist depicts the ambivalence of the urban population with a humorous and lively approach, while leading people to self-reflection. The other work, Baby Chicanos (Lot 772) , highlights the shape of a single chicken. It breaks away from the crowd and freely spreads its wings, becoming the one and only on the stage. Ceet’s Chicanos symbolize the extraordinariness of the ordinary, the bright colors resembling the colorful life, always reminding us to pursue our individualities and dare to break through.
