Expressing Beautiful Landscapes with Poetry
Walking into Pang Jiun's Poetic World of Colour
In his still lifes and landscape paintings, Pang Jiun has always found a delicate balance between classic and modern, perfectly blending the expressive power of Western oil painting with the freehand brushwork of oriental ink. Today, this 80-year-old man is still pursuing perfection in his creation, transitioning from the previously acclaimed “gray tone” style to the use of unrestrained color. The three works featured in this auction are the proof of such a transition.
Recalling the Beautiful Scenery of Guilin
Pang is obsessed with drawing Guilin's landscape. Over the years, his experience in painting the area's vistas has allowed him to develop a unique, poetic “gray tone” style. Completed in 2010, Guilin Landscape(Lot 49) is a mature work, not inferior to Li Keran's paintings. It adopts a horizontal layout, and thanks to its wide perspective, it fully presents the beautiful scenery of the Li River. Through the change of chromaticity, the artist shows mountains located in varying distances, giving the picture depth and dimension. The smooth water, as a mirror, reflects mountains and trees, while a few small fishing boats cause it to ripple. In terms of composition, the artist paints the mountains in the distance and the water in foreground, presenting his freehand style and stimulating viewers' imaginations.
The Intoxicating Fragrance of Lotus Flowers
In Lotus Pond(Lot 48), Pang used vivid oil painting techniques to express the colors and poetry of a lotus pond. The picture features a lotus pond where green lotus leaves and red lotus flowers are facing each other, and in the distance, there is a white-walled house with a black roof, showing the common practice of planting lotuses among ordinary families. Here, Pang subtly yet precisely captured the posture, brightness, and colors of the depicted lotus flowers, and due to the changing sunlight and flow of the water, each leaf has a different shade. From pale to dark pink, the lotus flowers stand upright, as if showing their independence and confidence, while welcoming everyone in to enjoy the hot summer day.
Beautiful Flowers & Prosperity and Harvest
In Good Season(Lot 47), Pang decided to go for a “complementary color” technique — he depicted beautiful and rich peony flowers with cold and warm tones, used bright yellow lines to outline the moist green leaves, and finally painted the contrasting curtains and holly fruit on both sides, creating a colorful and varied picture. The work represents a yearning for a happy life. The red fish on the black vase are a Chinese symbol of abundance and peace, while the three ripe persimmons emit a nice, pleasant feeling. With this work, Pang expressed a memorable personal wish to viewers for a good harvest and fruitful business.
