Turning Imagination into Works of Art: Astonishing Beauty
Wang Jieyin's Poetic CreationWang Jieyin graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1966. In 1986 he enrolled at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, becoming the first Chinese artist to study abroad since the Cultural Revolution. He grew up in Shanghai, where the society was already relatively open, and had immersed himself in Western painting, exploring its essence, his works having been included in the collections of the Shanghai Art Museum and the USC Pacific Asia Museum. Still Life, presented in this auction, is a masterpiece characterized by Wang's rigorous composition and ingenious use of color.

Still Life features glass vessels placed on the same plane as fruit, allowing the viewer's line of sight to be attracted to the space between the objects and the surface of the table. At the same time, the viewer's attention is immediately caught by the round and natural lines as well as the harmonious colors, the result of Wang's continuous exploration of the modes of expression of classical oil painting. Surrounded by the harmonious indigo and turquoise, the fruits and vessels stand out yet still harmoniously coexist. For example, both vases, one on the left and one on the right, are vertical, their bodies seemingly heavy while managing not to weigh down the composition of the picture. The glass luster on the surface of the vessels complements the simple black lines. The artist utilized lemon yellow and brilliant pink to depict the sun-lit pears and apples and enhanced the weight of the fruit with heavy colors, reminding the viewer of such fruits' sweetness. The cup in the center of the painting reflects the pattern of the tablecloth, giving a sense of vitality to the classical layout of the entire image.
