Autumn Sonata
Paddy in the South by Luo Euchun
As one of the greatest representatives of Chinese 3rd generation oil painters, Luo Erchun ignited a colour revolution with the vitality of modern art. Earlier in Suzhou Fine Art College, he got the training from the Chinese Impressionist Master Yan Wenliang, and constructed his internal world with the brushstroke of Fauvism and colour of post-impressionism. In 1970s, during his travel through Hunan, Yunnan and some other places, he created his signature series On Countryside, turning to be a landmark in his art career.
Paddy in the South finished in 1970s comes with lively colors and stretched brushstrokes, presenting a quiet paddy at night. Twisted trees grow upward, reaching the sky with lavish vitality. The spreading and dancing leaves on the crown are combusting, which embraces us with the passion of the artist. The deep and still night accompanies the dynamic and lively trees, and this compare and contrast shows us how saturated colors could be combined to create a romantic and poetic atmosphere. Beneath the galaxy are the eye-catching paddies, like golden lava floating on the ground, heavy but shining against the cold and dark night sky. All of these fufilled the Paddy in the South with the dramatic tense that could also be found in the post-impressionism artworks like the Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum by Van Gogh, playing a passionate and profound autumn sonata for us.
