Sophie Chang's Passion for Art

As a famous philanthropist devoted to charitable activities, Sophie Chang has been seeking for the sense of belonging from Buddhism since 2004. She practices meditation and studies Buddhist sutras frequently, which helps her to capture the phenomena in the world and comprehend them. In the meanwhile, her reflections on these observations become a part of her artworks.

The Blessing for Lives

Sophie Chang has been devoted to art creation since 2006. Undoubtedly a talented artist, she always takes experiments in art creation, looking for potential breakthroughs. It is the strong expression of her employment of oil colors together with the abstract Chinese calligraphic brushstrokes that becomes her peculiar artistic languages. In The View of Life (Lot 105) , colors that symbolize flowers are spread on the whole canvas with unrestrained brushstrokes. The red flowers seems to be blossoming vividly because of the uneven textures created through the heavy layers of oil paints and the specific gloss of oil paints. It's a passionate painting, making viewers to feel a strong sense of tensions, confidence and familiarities at the same time. The dotted green dots, white dots and yellow dots shine like crystalline dewdrops, highlighting the red flowers. Such is also the praise for the magnificent nature. The deep blue background reminds viewers of the vast universe. The joy of bloom and ripeness represents the best blessings for lives.

The Beautiful Encounters

By contrast, the vertical composition of Encounter (Lot 104) is inspired by the traditional Chinese landscape painting to present a delicate and elegant aesthetics. Sophie Chang employs an abstract approach to feature the gradual change of layers implied by the interweaved yellow, green and red brushstrokes. The gradual change of the colors resembles an abstract rainbow, symbolizing all kinds of encounters during everyone's life journey. At the bottom there is an arch bridge over the glittering lake. On the bridge displays various encounters, reunions and all the experiences in-between in human society. Sophie Chang's master of colors and representations can be sensed through the rendition of the gradual change of abstract colors on the upper part of the canvas along with the realistic landscape on the lower part. She successfully creates a vast world in the painting where viewers can wander around.
