A Scent that Purifies the Heart
the Floriography of Zhao Dajun
Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts is one of the Eight-Greatest art colleges in China. Directed by Wan Jinsheng and others, it became the cradle of many great contemporary Chinese artists. Zhao Dajun is a representative among them of great significance. He was admitted to the Oil Painting Department in 1958, and started his teaching life right after his graduation in 1962. The retrospective exhibition of Zhao, Holy Mountain, opened in Shixiang Art in the May of 2019, Beijing, attracting Wang Xingwei, Qin Qi, and some other students graduated from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, and receiving a wide range feedback in the circle.
Zhao is praised as "Cézanne of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts" by the students. With the solid skills in academy style, he pursues the beauty eternally. In 1987, he worked as the deputy director of the oil painting department, and committed himself to a series of paintings, Flower. These paintings come in modern styles, including the example, Flower III, created in 1993, which shows artist's further self-exploration and exquisite refinement of the expression and emotion of oil painting. The painting is geometrically divided in composition. Flowers dance in a long vase, with the artist's unique balance and mixture of abstraction and concretion. In terms of the use of color, Zhao applied orange, pink, blue, and many soft tones to fill up the blocks, gradually and gently. At the blooming moment, artist captured the subtle change in color. In the overlapping, it seems that there is light coming out of the canvas, illuminating a corner of the room. The flower blooms and gives out the refreshing fragrance under a warm lamp, echoing his nobleness in character and insistence in creation and exploration.
