Body of a Buddhi Tree, Heart Like a Stand Mirror
The Spiritual Zen Thought of Chen Jinqing
Chen Jinqing, who was born in Fujian Province, China, in 1982 and graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2002, is a sculptor whose observations of life are informed by a distinct clarity of spiritual vision. Chen's works are absolutely sincere in their effort to recreate the authenticity of things in ways that grasp the heart and dazzle the eyes. In recent years, the artist has held exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore and Beijing and his works have been collected by the Governor's Museum in Malacca, Malaysia and MCFAEE Arts, Malaysia. In 2017, Chen's Buddhi in Blossom appeared on the big screen in Times Square, New York City, and was for a time a topic of popular discussion.
Chen Jinqing's “Buddhi” series of works focus on a wise acolyte, whose body resembles the shape of a Buddhi tree, as their central figure. The brown robe doubles as the trunk of the tree and his round head is akin to the fruit of wisdom. In Buddhi Series No.3, the figure has a smile on his face and his hand is held out as if greeting or seeking to embrace someone. The robe flapping in the wind and the sleeves flowing in the breeze make the acolyte a testament to the Zen Buddhist maxim: “The buddhi did not really the form of a tree possess, a clear reflector is restricted not to a plane; When no such thing ever really existed, where could dust have gathered and lain?” The Boddhi tree is a symbol of wisdom and Chen Jinqing uses his own understanding of the bohdi, which extends from the appearance of the acolyte to his inner essence. In this way, the artist uses the body language of a guide, offering resolutions to difficulties encountered so viewers appreciate the art, but also attain spiritual detachment and unimpeded understanding.
