The Artistic Aesthetics of Shinji Ohmaki

Shinji Ohmaki was born in Gifu, Tokyo and graduated from Department of Sculpture from the University of Tokyo. His creations used the momentary changes of light and shadow and rich image layers as elements, integrated art into the environment, and studied the conjunction of human and nature, poetic and philosophical. He has actively participated various international art fair and exhibitions in recent years. In 2018, during Art Basel in Hong Kong, Ohmaki gained widespread attention and fame with his work Liminal Air. His works are collected in Union Bank of Switzerland, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Korea Museum of Modern Art, and are recognized internationally.

In this auction we present Echoes-Crystallization, a representative work of Shinji Ohmaki's Echoes series. It was exhibited in the solo exhibition “Tree of Life” held by Mind Set Art Center in 2013. It is the only creation based on pure red flower cloth, charming and beautiful.

The Scorching Beauty of Life

For Ohmaki who grew up in a tailor's family, fabrics are widely used in his creations, carrying the spirit and memories of traditional handicrafts, and through his creations, they change and gain new meaning to life and artistic thinking. In this Echoes-Crystallization, from different white and colorful fabrics which are often used in this series, he chose a cloth similar to Chinese red, and carefully painted white floral decorations with correction fluid and toner. In the space, the colorful flowers like peonies, peaches, bluebells and all the others are vying for blossom, presenting a life scene with infinite prosperous and blossom. The raised traces of the correction fluid create embossed patterns, and the brilliant color powder constitutes a translucent and poetic beauty in the refraction of light, creating an unparalleled sense of sight and the eternal beauty of solidified beauty.

Through the corrective meaning of the correction fluid, the work reshapes new life on the old things, thereby realizing the meaning of “rebirth” of flowers, making the opposing concepts of past and present, disappearance and existence harmoniously coexist in the overlaps of vision, reverberating in a tangible yet infinite way.
