The Elegant Charm of Dharma

Ju Ming started from carving in temples in his early years. Folk art expanded his subjects and elements in creation. In the Nativism series, he also combined myths, legends, and historical allusions to show the world-renowned war gods, monks, and Buddhas with a cutting technique full of cultural vitality and charm. Dharma completed in 1981 is based on the allusion of Bodhidharma crossing the river on one reed leaf. Ju vividly presents the charm of Bodhidharma's transcendent charm with the carving technique that balances the fine details and simplified body. The work impressively captures the moment of drifting of Bodhidharma. The protagonist has a reed on his feet, a stick on his shoulder, and a Buddhism posture with one hand, concentrating on crossing the river. His face is majestic, his full forehead is full of wisdom, and his eyes are very divine. Both extensive and exquisite carving techniques are applied to fit the characteristics of the subject. Beards, eyebrows, high foreheads, and other details are stressed, presenting a bronze or rough or smooth appearance. Regarding the carving of the robe and sleeves, the cut of the large area shows the strength and momentum of moving forward in the wind, with the sharp texture adding certainty and calmness to it.
