The Flying Imagination, the Posture of Dreamer
The Rationality and Romance of Hsi Shih-Pin's Creation

“Bold deconstruction; Without rules; Sculpture is an exhibition of precision art.”
——Hsi Shih-Pin

Among all Hsi Shih-Pin's works with animal and mythological theme, The High Bird would be the mostly appraised one. The bottom of the sculptor looks like an unfolding book, above which, a city-like structure grows upward like an architecture belongs to the future. The body of the work gradually enlarged from small to top forms a fire phoenix with silver brilliance, appearing to be parked on the building. Hsi once said, “The origin of the High Bird is the phoenix in Greek mythology. They collect scented branches and grass leaves every five hundred years, and then regenerate into young birds after setting fire to themselves. I find this process of self-immolation extremely stimulating and full of happiness, with a sense of detachment, and a sense of blissful rebirth.” Hsi cuts out the various elements that make up the body of the high bird from two-dimensional stainless steel through a variety of geometrically complex shapes. Then he splices and shapes the three-dimensional structure, creating a “huge fantasy building”. In countless cutting, assembling, and welding, it becomes the protagonist of the ancient myth full of whimsy. With flying wings, meteor-like plumes, beautiful flower crowns on the head, and budding flowers on the tail, it enables people to feel its imaginary power of flying. The artist physicalizes his mind with high mastery of concrete practice and transformation of illusory shapes in his brain and unique sculptural characters. A closer look at the silver stainless steel shows the different textures of shiny and matte surfaces created by various polishing methods. The shape full of streamlines pulling upwards symbolizes the flying dazzling and the brilliance of the courageous dreamer, dazzling and fascinating.
