LARGE ZHANGMU CHEST WITH A BASE

177×89.5×95 cm (69 5/8×35 1/4×37 3/8 in)

The rectangular storage chest (yilong) with a hinged cover is mounted with two circular lock-plates at the front and pairs of bail handles at the sides. A separate stand fitted with four rollers lifts the chest about one and a half inches off the floor. The front is carved with a large vine bearing double-gourds issuing from a mountain over waves undulating symmetrically toward geometric scrolls at either corner.
Used for the storage of furs and winter clothing, the carved design of double-gourds on the present piece dates it firmly to the mid-Kangxi period, when chests bearing this symbol of fecundity and of the desire for male progeny were a popular element of a bridal trousseau. It is rare to find chests with their complete under- structure.
