The Appearance of Great Elegance
Tseng Yuho's Majestic Sense
At the age of twelve, Tseng studied traditional Chinese ink and calligraphy for more than ten years under the tutelage of the famous artist Pu Shi. Later, Tseng Yuho started her unique career of “Dsui painting”. This is to use different textures of paper to tear and shape, to collage them onto paper, and then to dye the paper with acrylic and ink in accordance with the rich texture of the paper.
Since the 1950s, she held numerous solo exhibitions at major institutions both at home and abroad, such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Asian Art Museum in Paris, and the National Museum of History in Taipei, and her works have been collected by the M+ Museum in Hong Kong and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. This time, we present Rhythmic Stanza from the mid-1980s, a masterpiece of her mature art.
Ancient and Distant
In Rhythmic Stanza, the artist used tricolour paper to depict a poetic nature. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to use the layered media with ease, showing a tension of life. The lines in this work are sequentially sublimated upward, depicting the inner peace of nature. The bottom half of the work is deliberately left in blank, cleverly linking the upper and lower spaces. Tseng Yuho's synthesis of ancient and modern inspirations is no less than a legend in the history of modern Chinese painting.
