9.5×15.3 cm (3 3/4×6 in)
Carved from a single block of wood, the vessel has six foliate lobes rising from the cushion-molded base, with rounded sides of conforming section,to the molded rim accented with a wide flat trim, all set on three low bracket feet.
The clue to this extremely rare object in huanghuali is that, unlike bitongs,it was originally made in exactly this shape with no inset base. It was thus an ideal container for liquid ink or for washing brushes, with or without a brass liner.
The only other one I have ever seen is in my personal collection. It is a pity they are so rare since they make the perfect 'home' for short,'fat' cut flowers.
