The pale glaze on the present pillow differs from the majority of other examples of this type where the body is usually covered in in brown or orange and black stripes such as the example from the Yangdetang Collection sold at Christie’s Hong Kong,30 November 2016,lot 3122. The pale coat appears to be intentional as evidenced by another example with a similar coat in the University of Michigan Museum of Art,Ann Arbor, accession no. 1993 / 1.103. A possible explanation for the paler coat is that the pillow is depicting a white Bengali tiger.
