(Yongzheng Six-Character Mark and of the period(1723-1735)) (b. 清雍正)
AN EXTREMELY RARE RUBY-ENAMELLED 'CHRYSANTHEMUM' DISH

17.5 cm.(6 7/8 in.)diam.

“Ruby-red” enamel is also referred to as “gold ruby”. The ruby-red glaze is considered one of the rarest and most complex of enamels produced in the Ming and Qing dynasties. In Tang Ying’s Taocheng Jishibei Ji(Commemorative Stele on Ceramic Production),the document lists nearly forty types of monochrome glazes including ruby-red. Ruby-red enamel was considered a foreign colour, falangcai as it was first introduced into China from Western Countries. Eventually the name “European Red” was adopted. Production began during the Kangxi reign and flourished during the ensuing Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns.
Ruby red enamelled chrysanthemum dishes are extremely rare. Only two examples appear to have been published including one in the set of twelve Yongzeng-marked chrysanthemum dishes in the Beijing Palace Museum. Another example is in the Museum of Fine Arts,Boston, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, the World’s Great Collections,Tokyo,New York and San Francisco,1980-82,vol. 10,no. 264.
