A FINE SCHIST STONE HEAD OF BUDDHA

23 cm.(9 in.)high


This Buddha head has a beaded satin turban wrapped around his head. His face in a serene expression with curled up moustache,his hair is arranged upwards in a topknot centered by a flaming jewel which separates the hair into two. A similar example is illustrated in Gandharan Sculpture – A Catalogue of the Collection in the Museum of Art and Archaeology University of Missouri-Columbia,Missouri,1981,p.35;and another similar piece is illustrated in Gandharan Art(II)— The World of the Buddha,Tokyo,2003,p. 41,pl. 98.
