The shape and design of the current box is reminiscent of lacquer boxes produced during the Ming dynasty. The incurved inner rim is designed to prevent the incense powder contained in the box from blowing away. Two other Hu Wenming-marked boxes of the same form have been published. One is illustrated by P. Moss in The Literati Mode,London,1986,no. 143;the other was included in the Oriental Ceramics Society exhibition,Arts from the Scholar’s Studio,1986,Hong Kong,no. 231.
