A Dance of Colour, Enchanted Body and Soul
It was in the year of 1954 that artist Yoshihara Jiro created Gutai Art Group in Japan, which was the most discussed and eye-catching art group in Japan after World War II (WWII), It connected the channel with American and European contemporary arts, broke the traditional rule in art between east and west, created a modern artistic language inherited from traditional Japanese culture as well as influence from contemporary abstract art.
A prominent member of Gutai Group, Kazuo Shiraga believes that hands will be too overpowering when paint, thus had come with a unique style of Foot Painting——painted by foot instead of hands. In Composition, red and blue color relieved with strength under his brush, shaped two circles in the center of the work. The implicit ink matches the bright green, together brings vivid vibrancy under Shiraga’s foot art, reveals the artist’s dual concepts toward body vs. media, soul vs. eyes, and unconsciousness vs. consciousness etc., The weakness and sensitivity of paper texture have made it more difficult to deal with the strength of holding brush by foot. The work is the perfect presentation of Kazuo Shiraga’s exquisite technique as well as unique spirit.
