Archaistic jade jue are relatively rare, although a number of Qianlong and Jiaqing jade examples bearing Imperial reign marks have been published and sold at auction. A pair from the Von Oertzen Collection, is illustrated in S. Howard Hansford, Jade. Essence of Hills and Streams, Johannesburg, 1969, pl. D3 and a Qianlong-marked green jade example was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, Water, Pine and Stone Retreat Collection – Qianlong, 8th October 2009, lot 1832.
The present vessel is less elaborately detailed, retaining the original form of the Shang dynasty prototypes and leaving the surface undecorated to expose the natural qualities of the jade stone. This, together with the material used in the carving of the vessel, would indicate an earlier date than the Qianlong-marked examples.
