9.5 cm. (3 3⁄4 in.) wide
Leonard and Ann Marsak were passionate collectors of Chinese art particularly in jade carvings where they began collecting in 1977. Leonard taught at University of California, Santa Barbara; Ann was a published historian who was involved in land management, environmental activism and local politics. Their collection was amassed in the 1980s and early 1990s; half of the collection was bequeathed to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art following Ann’s passing in 2001, the remaining were sold through public auction.
Compare a related recumbent horse carving previously in the collection of Vernon Wethered (1865-1952) and exhibited, on loan, to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (1982-2017), subsequently sold at Sotheby’s London, 10 May 2017, lot 277.
