Large Buddhist stupas made for religious purposes are exceptionally rare and only a small number have been published. Compare with a Tang dynasty example preserved in the Shanxi History Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji, Vol.6, Shanghai, 2000, pl.128; and another example illustrated by Seiichi Mizuno, Tousansai (Tang Sancai), Heibonsha, Japan, 1977, Vol.35, p.125, fig.65. A third sancai-glazed example dated to the Tang dynasty was sold at Sotheby’s Paris, 14 June 2007, lot 116.
