A JUN BLUE-GLAZED TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER(Northern Song/ Jin Dynasty, 10th-13th Century)

16 cm. (6 1/4 in.) diam.

Jun ware is classified as one of the ‘five classic wares’ of the Song dynasty and was produced primarily at a number of kilns in Yuxian, Henan province. Often referred to by Chinese scholars as ‘moon white’, the lustrous lavender-blue Jun glazes have a rich and opalescent quality that is highly sought after by collectors. The sky-blue glaze on the present lot is subtly striking, exhibiting a sophisticated yet restrained and elegant nature.

Examples similar to the present lot are found in museum collections around the world. Compare a Jun-glazed tripod incense burner and cover also with mythical beast-style feet in the collection of the Percival David Foundation (accession no.PDF.95), presently exhibited in the British Museum, London; and another (accession no.1947, 0712.107) bequeathed to the collection of the British Museum by Henry J. Oppenheim in 1947. For an example sold at auction, see a related Jun tripod incense burner with purple-splashes but without mythical beast-style feet, formerly in the collection of Aizaburo Iinuma, Tokyo, exhibited in Watashi no Atsumeta Yakimono Ten [Selected Ceramics Exhibition], The Museum of Modern Art Kamakura & Hayama, Kanagawa, 1970, no.3, subsequently sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 2 December 2016, lot 527.
