Longquan celadon-glazed jars with covers such as the present lot, were made in pairs. The animals depicted in relief on the jar represent the cardinal directions including the ‘Green Dragon of the East’ and the ‘White Tiger of the West’. Related examples dated to the Southern Song dynasty with the dragons in high relief as on the present pair, include a pair in the Percival David Collection, now housed at the British Museum, London, published by Margaret Medley, Illustrated Catalogue of Celadon Wares, London, 1977, pl.IV, no.36. A covered jar carved in low relief with a dragon dated to the Ming dynasty, from the Alfred Clark and Jack Chia Collections, was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, An Important Private Collection of Chinese Celadons and Other Ceramics, 5 November 1996, lot 612.
