A BLUE AND WHITE BUDDHIST EMBLEM BOWL(Dated Dingwei Year of Daoguang, reign corresponding to 1847)

11.4 cm. (4 1/2 in.) diam.

Property from the Collection of John Ault

The four-characters within circular medallions form the literal meaning of “with high mountains, the river flows deep”. The unique eight-character mark at the base denotes that the current lot was privately commissioned and can be attributed to the potter Wen Langshan.

The current lot comes from the collection of the late John Ault, snuff bottle collector and enthusiast of Chinese art. Mr. Ault collected during the 1960s and 1970s mainly focusing on snuff bottles, whereafter his snuff bottle collection was published by Robert Kleiner in 1990.
