A PARCEL-GILT LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF WHITE TARA(Early Qing Dynasty, 17th/ 18th Century)

50 cm. (19 5/8 in.) high

Property from the Collection of Cheng Huan, S.C.

Provenance:
Acquired in Hong Kong in the 1990s

The figure of White Tara, the bodhistattva of Longevity is heavily-cast seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus pedestal framed by beaded rims. Her right hand is seen here resting on her lap in varada mudra; her left hand is raised in vitarka mudra, which most often holds a stem of lotus. The White Tara has seven eyes. Her pair of downcast eyes simultaneously sees the relative and dualistic worlds. She also has a third eye on her forehead, which is said to retain the ability to see the unity of ultimate reality. She has one eye on each palm of her hands and each bottom of her feet, which signifies that all her actions are governed by her ultimate wisdom and compassion.
This large figure of White Tara belongs to groups which are known to have been offered as Imperial tributes to the Qing Court. These figures would probably have been cast and produced in reference to a figure such as the Imperial example in the Palace of Yonghe Gong, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Buddhist Statues of Tibet, Hong Kong, 2003, no.231. Compare also to another related and stylistically-similar group of figures given by the Dalai Lama shortly after his reincarnation in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing; one of the figures illustrated in Tibetan Buddhist Sculptures, Beijing, 2009, no.25
