A RARE BLUE-GROUND SILK KESI SCROLL, DEPICTING THE MINISTER OF OFFICIAL PERSONNEL AFFAIRS(Kangxi Period (1661-1722))

250 cm. (98 3/8 in.) long

The figure depicted in the present lot is an official wearing hat and robe representing the Ming court. The red colour attire worn by the official indicates the official dynastic colour appropriate to the first three ranks of the official court. The dragon robe is decorated with a central five-clawed dragon which is coiled around the shoulders and onto the torso of the wearer, further flanked by four-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls at the hem and sleeves, all against a leafy and floral ground and above crashing waves against steep rockworks. The official is seen here carrying a ruyi-sceptre which is indicative of his office; his left hand resting on the head of a young attendant holding a peach, the fruit of longevity.

The kesi of the current lot is woven with the warp threads in the horizontal direction. Compare a silk kesi of the identical subject but slightly larger in size in the Liaoning Provincial Museum, Shenyang, illustrated in Tapestry and Embroidery in the Collection of the Museum of Liao-ning Province, Tokyo, 1983, nos. 31-32.
