(Yongzheng Six-Character Mark and of the period(1723-1735))
AN FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE LONGQUAN-TYPE INCISED CELADON-GLAZED‘PEONY’WASHER

26 cm.(10 1/4 in.)diam.

The inspiration for this type of basin stems from the Yongzheng emperor’s desire to emulate and perfect glazes and designs from the Song and Ming dynasties. This would become an overriding theme during the early 18th century and would be continued by his successor, the Qianlong Emperor. In this case, the form, glaze and decoration, all try to recreate examples from the Longquan kilns of the 14th and 15th century.
Only one other Longquan-type Yongzheng–marked basin of this design appears to have been published,a very similar basin sold at Christie’s London,12th December 1988,lot 332.
Two Qianlong-marked examples of this type, but with the addition of chilong to the interior, have been sold at auction. The first at Sotheby’s Hong Kong,20th May 1980,lot 77,and again,24th November 1987,lot 117;the second, from the Collection of Baron Denzaburo Fujita, also sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong,8 April 2013,lot 3071. A Qianlong-marked blue and white basin with lotus scroll to the exterior and the bajixiang to the interior, was sold at Sotheby’s London,17 November 1999,lot 786.
A variation in this design and glaze,no longer strictly in imitation of Longquan prototypes, can be found in a smaller washer from the J.M. Hu Collection, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong,9 October 2012,lot 101. In addition to the smaller proportions, the washer features a much paler glaze than the present example and the decoration to the interior consists of five bats among turbulent waves.
For an example of the original Longquan prototype, compare with a Longquan celadon basin dated to the early Ming dynasty in the National Palace Collection,Taipei, included in the exhibition,Green Longquan Celadon of the Ming Dynasty,Taipei,2009,no. 133.
