A SUPERB GE-TYPE CRACKLE-GLAZED VASE,MEIPING

22 cm.(8 3/4 in.)high

The present vase is a classic example of the early 18th century interest in recreating classic glazes of the Song Dynasty and the close adherence to its Song precursors, would suggest an early date in the Qianlong reign. The ge-type glaze attempts to faithfully recreate the colour and crackle of its predecessors on a more contemporary form.
No other example of this exact shape in a ge-type glaze appears to have been published. What is interesting and what sets this apart from most other Qianlong vases of this form, are the horizontal ribbed bow-string bands encircling the body. This same use of raised bands can be seen in a Yongzheng-marked guan-type meiping with three small lug handles adorning the shoulder in the Palace Museum,Beijing, illustrated in Qingdai Yuyao Ciqi, vol. 1(II). A Qianlong ru-type vase of identical form and size as the present vase, with similar bow-string bands, was sold at Sotheby's Parke-Bernet Galleries,New York,28 June 1944,lot 262. Compare, also, with a related guan-type meiping in the Palace Museum Collection,Beijing, illustrated in Monochrome Porcelain,The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum,Hong Kong,1999,p. 230,no. 208. The Palace Museum example is moulded with three ram’s heads on the shoulder.
