(17th/ 18th Century)
A JADE AND HARDSTONE INLAID BRONZE RUYI SCEPTRE

33 cm.(13 in.)long

Ruyi sceptres were widespread and frequently used as auspicious ornamentation in the Imperial Court but this particular form with the inlaid nine-petal flower-head and bronze shaft appears to be a very unusual decorative technique. Although no other published examples of this type appear to be known, they do feature on Dehua figures of Guanyin dating to the 17th and 18th century. An illustration of a ruyi sceptre of similar design is illustrated in a painting on silk from an album of Imperial sceptres held in a private collection(fig1).
