White jade with naturalistic brownish and greyish-white suffusions. The recumbent bird has its head slightly raised, round eyes, sharp beak and short neck. The head is decorated with engraved ruyi cloud designs and the two wings are decorated with interlocking cloud patterns, net designs and incised parallel lines. The long tail hangs down and is decorated with straight lines to represent the bird’s feathers. The lower part of the two legs is decorated with engraved square designs. The whole work is realistically depicted with lively resonance, showing refined carving techniques in modeling. It is a very rare and unusual decorative object carved in the round.
