A RED SANDSTONE OIL LAMP(Han Dynasty(202 BC-AD 220))

Provenance:
Acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s

The oil lamp of lenticular section with a central column carved with palm fronds flanked by a pair of seated figures holding the oil receptacles aloft,all supported on a large base carved on one side with a figure and a large turtlelike creature,the reverse with a coiled snake on a cross-hatched ground.
Compare with a pottery oil lamp dated to the Han dynasty,also featuring an indistinct figure and serpents holding aloft the oil receptacles,in the Cernuschi Museum Collection,Paris,illustrated by Gilles Beguin,Activités du musée Cernuschi,Arts asiatiques,1999,t.54,p. 131.
