Provenance:
Acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s

Each lion powerfully carved seated on its haunches,the muscular body supported on outstretched front legs,the face with a fierce expression,mouth agape exposing the teeth.
Compare the present pair with a stone carving of a lion dated to the Northern Wei dynasty from the J.T.Tai Collection,sold at Sotheby’s New York,13 September 2013,lot 149.
