Trumpet-mouthed and shoulderless, this wine vessel has a long neck and a bulging belly supported by a high and flared ring foot. Zun-jars of this shape are usually described as cylindrical. The belly is decorated with a dense frieze of stylized animal masks with oblong eyes and inwardly coiled horns bounded by a row of circles above and below. There are two encircling raised bow strings between the neck and the belly, and three between the belly and the ring foot. The base on the interior is inscribed with three characters, the first of which is illegible and should have been a clan emblem or name. Based on the remaining two characters, the vessel should have been made in honour of a deceased forefather canonized as “Yi”.
