A VIETNAMESE BLUE AND WHITE ‘LOTUS’ DISH(Le Dynasty , 15th-16th century)

41.2 cm. (16 1⁄4 in.) diam.

Painted to the interior with a large central peony bloom within further scroll and peony bloom borders in the well and at the rim , the reverse with lotus lappets.

The Chinese annexation of Vietnam during the early 15th Century provided the technology to begin replacing the black iron decoration used previously with underglaze cobalt blue. The influence of Chinese motifs popular at that time is also very apparent in Vietnamese ceramics produced during this period , partly because they began competing with their Chinese counterparts for the lucrative trade in ceramics made for the South East Asian and Middle-Eastern export market. The production in Vietnam was spurred on by the Imperial prohibition of the trade in ceramics in China between 1436-1465.

This present Vietnamese dish derives directly from Chinese contemporaneous counterparts. However , the heavier body and freedom of decorative design is what diffrentiates Vietnamese ceramics from their Chinese counterparts.
