PROVENANCE
Acquired directly from the artist’s relative by previous owner
Private collection, AsiaA trailblazer in twentieth-century Chinese oil painting, Tang Yunyu had the honor of being featured in the China Art Association’s first regular art exhibition. Her reputation, issuing both from her subjective, impressionistic style and her educational background (she studying abroad, both in Japan and in Europe), puts her on a par with Pan Yuliang, another outstanding female artist. Tang’s work is marked by a special freshness and clarity; each still life she creates brims with delicate and delicate colors and a sense of elegance. The result of her experimentation into the “sinicization” of Western art forms is that the objects and motifs she depicts radiate a traditional Chinese charm, but conveyed via the medium of Western-style oil painting. White Orchid, the work put up for auction here, is a fine example of that undertaking.
In this work, pure white flowers stand quietly, petals stretching out in all directions. The leftmost stem has turned downward, the others are turned up, towards the light, the varying stages of blossoming and withering cleverly captured in a way that alludes to the passage of time and the peaceful progress of life. Precise, sleek strokes merge a Western Realism with the spirit of Chinese freehand brushwork. With inspiration drawn from the techniques used by the impressionists, she meticulously captures light and shadow to bring out the rays of the setting sun streaming in through a window, injecting a feeling of warmth into the coolness of the flower.
