PROVENANCE
Private collection, Asia

This work is accompanied by a Certification of Authenticity issued by Juming Culture & Education FoundationMother Monkey and Baby, a wood carving from his years of tutelage under Yu-Yu Yang . On the front-side of this piece, the mother’s body is hunched, with one hand on the side of the baby monkey’s head. Moving around to the back-side, however, only the posterior of the mother monkey can be seen while the baby monkey is hidden under the trunk. This view evokes a strong sense of emotion emanating from the warmth of the mother, and the carving is a veritable echo of Chinese popular nativist movement of the time in addition to traditional Confucianism.
