Just as Taichi was reaching its pinnacle of success in 1981, Ju Ming traveled to New York to continue his art studies, and it was during his 14-month visit he developed the cornerstone to Living World. At that time, the popularity of Pop Art was gaining traction in the United States with its bright colors and bold and direct expressions of meaning. This artistic style had a profound impact on the already successful Ju Ming, and Living World (lot 811) was thus born out of its influence. The series utilizes fragile cork for impulsive creation rather than firm wood, the traditionally preferred material, and bold and contrasting colors have been placed upon its surface. The scene depicting two Eastern women clad in purple and gaily giggling emits a comic-like charm, but this series uses more than just sculptures to express societal splendor. The artist also put together a paper collage, which became manifest in Home Chat (lot 810), in which an ordinary man and woman can be seen happily chittering and chatting away at a coffee table in their home, occasionally taking sips from the pot of heated wine on the table, which provides them with even more fodder to feed their joyful laughter.
